Bar trick inspires invention to save lives of mothers and newborns

Jorgé Odon, an Argentinian car mechanic and amateur inventor, saw the video below and was inspired to develop the Odon Device. It is designed to extract babies from birth canals when the mother and/or baby are in distress, using the same inflated plastic bag principle used to extract a cork from inside a wine bottle as shown in the video. According to this article in the NYT, backers of the device, including the World Health Organization, think it could save the lives of thousands of women and their babies, and obviate the need for many Caesarian sections. What a great story.
