Founder of Kickstarter on lawsuit threat over Miles Davis blip-hop tribute album cover

Interesting blog post from Andy Baio, one of the founders of Kickstarter. Baio commissioned, “Kind of Bloop,” a Miles Davis tribute album made by musicians who specialize in 8-bit electronic music (reminiscent of the bleeps and bloops from first generation video games). For the album art, Baio commissioned an artist friend to create a digitized version of the famous cover photo from Davis’s perennial bestseller, “Kind of Blue.” Jay Maisel, the man who took that copyrighted photograph was not happy about that. One $32,000 settlement later, Baio muses about the ongoing struggle between copyright holders and fair-use-claiming creatives.
