Two former Village Voice reporters and a graphic designer created The Smoking Gun in 1997. The site, which posted public documents relating to famous people, big corporations and well-known public controversies, was a masterpiece of simple, stylish, usable design:
It was distinctive and, after 10 freaking years, it still worked:
The site is now used as a promotional vehicle for Tru TV, it’s corporate parent. Nothing wrong with that. Still, I was pretty put off when I visited recently and saw a new makeover. Maybe it’s just me, but this seems like a case of more being less:
